reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, hatred, and their envy is now perished, neither have they any more a portion in anything under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:5,6.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest. Ecclesiastes 9:10.
For the grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate Thee. They that go down to the pit cannot hope for Thy truth. The living, the living he shall praise Thee. Isaiah 38:18,19.

Death is as a very deep sleep. The next thing that will be known is the time of the resurrection, when Jesus calls to those that sleep with a shout.

Nothing in any of these verses speaks of another part in us that leaves the fleshly body that is buried and goes on living somewhere else. The Bible considers each human being to be an integral unit. There is not a part of us that is separate and can live on its own somewhere else. The Bible says that the mind, where the thoughts are, dies too, the personality does not live somewhere else. There is not a spirit that lives in another plane. The spirit is the breath that we have in our lungs. The Bible is clear that death does not mean that we are alive in another place. We are resting in peace, but not forgotten of God. In the committal at our funeral, we are put in a safe place to wait for the resurrection at the end of time. The funeral service talks of being buried ‘in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection,’ and this is right. This is what the Bible says. Even if our ashes are scattered, God has not forgotten us and He will call us in the resurrection. It is only the mythology, stories, folklore and traditions that we have been brought up with that have confused us in our thinking and sometimes can add to the fear that we experience.

In explaining these things to the new Christians at Thessalonica, Paul said,

Comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:18.

The Bible is quite clear that death is as a sleep for one and all with a resurrection to follow at the end of time. Jesus said:

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all
that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5:29

Conclusion. The words ‘spirit’ and ‘soul’ which you may have been wondering about, will be discussed later, and more fully, using all the verses in the Bible relating to the topic. Questions will come into your mind; but the object of these pages is to answer all the commonly asked questions about what happens when we die. All the answers will be given using only the Bible as the source of information. Scripture will be compared with Scripture to gain a balanced and consistent view of what the Bible says. This will be done with honesty and openness about the words of the Bible so that you can have a comfort that can be relied on.
