Understanding and coping with bereavement
special, hand-made by God, personally receiving life as a gift. The Bible says that we were originally made by God, moulded from the soil, formed from the dust. But that form was not alive. Only when God breathed into Adam the breath of life did Adam become a living soul, a living being. He walked and talked; he could use his mind to choose names for the animals. He had insight into his situation to realise that he was alone, because Eve had not yet been formed to stand beside him in life, and he sensed this aloneness.
These are some of the signs of life that we clearly recognise today. Adam was not a robot. He had physical ability, mental capacity, and all the signs of personality. Either the explanation in Genesis is truly the word of God - or it is a lie.

If it is a lie, then no one else has yet found the reliable answers to the questions about life and death. The scientist, with his experiments and research, can reproduce the proteins that are in the body, but although these are the essential elements of living creatures, scientists cannot make them move and eat and reproduce and live.
Only what God has told us about our origins gives us true understanding of who we are.

Life from the hand of God.

We naturally ask where we came from, what is life? As a child, I had a fear of the dentist and I used to cope with these fears by playing at being a dentist. Outside the old house where we lived in Scotland, the red, sandstone windowsills were cracked and I used to collect black, shiny delphinium seeds and push them into the crevices till the cracks were 'filled' just like a tooth. But somewhere during that time, the thought came to me that those seeds would never be able to grow as I had squashed them and the life had gone from them. Even in a childish way, I realised that life seems so easily snuffed out, and wondered to myself just what it was that was lost? Where does it come from?

The Bible gives answers with certainty.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1.
All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life. John 1:3,4.
The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Job 33:4.
Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. John 14:6.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, which is the only and blessed Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords…who only hath immortality. 1 Timothy 6:15,16.

Conception

When we are conceived, it is God giving us some of that life that belongs to Him, and the tiny cells begin to divide and grow. By contrast with Him, our bodies are called mortal bodies; we are all born to die; we do not have immortality by birth. God is immortal. The Bible calls us mortals. This means we can expect to die. It is something that we cannot avoid.

Life is intensely important to us. You have seen pictures of rescue workers searching for signs of life after an earthquake, and the rejoicing when someone is brought out alive. We have lifeboats on ships. The surgeon operates to save life. There is training in artificial respiration to learn how to restart the breathing process. We cling to life.
