Understanding and coping with bereavement
Age will become the beauty of youth, and strength will be renewed. Grey hairs and the lines of worry will be gone. All the promises of God that we have clung to in faith will now be real. It also means that the bodies we have now which become ill and diseased will be changed into bodies fit for heaven. We know they will be real, for Isaiah also tells us that we shall eat and plant gardens and build homes in future times. There will be nothing about us that can deteriorate again. God will give us glorious bodies. Human words are insufficient to explain what God in His love has in mind for us. We can only use Bible words and wait and see. We must live for Him now, and then at that time the reality will be ours. He will give us a new body to put on the character we have developed in the testing and growing time now. It will be the finishing touch, and it will be immortal.
All through the Bible the promise and reward for obedience has been eternal life or everlasting life. It is at Christ’s Second Coming that He will give it to us. He will give it to us all at the same time. We
shall all receive our reward at the same moment, the Bible characters of old, and the most recent Christian.
Here are some of the Bible promises about everlasting life:
Whosoever believeth in Him shall... have everlasting life.’ John 3:16. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.’ Romans 6:22 .
‘Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.’ John 6:54
Many people will have gone to the grave with accident-damage and injuries, heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurones disease and many, many others, too numerous to name. They may have used sticks and walking frames, glasses, hearing aids, along with more technical aids to assist with the functions of a tired mortal body. When Jesus raises them, they will not be like that. Isaiah in his prophecy of these times says, ‘Be strong, fear not, behold your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense, He will come and save you. Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened , and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped, then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing . And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.’ Isaiah 35:4-6,10.
There is still more. Peter, in his second letter to Christians everywhere gives this glimpse of the power of the Second Coming of Jesus and how it will effect our world and atmosphere. ‘But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.’ The apostle of the Lord concludes this description with an appeal. ‘Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved what manner of persons ought ye to be in all
manner of holy conversation
[lifestyle] and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?’ This coming will not be a quiet, secret coming. There will be noise and fire and commotion with a great tempest. ‘Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about Him.’ Psalm 50:3.
The fire surrounding God will have its effect as He passes through our atmosphere, and the pollution of the earth will be cleansed. On earth, there will be an earthquake such as we have never seen the like of before. The whole geography of our world will be changed. ‘And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great … and every island fled away and the mountains were not found.’ Revelation 16:18,20.
